The Art Gallery of Windsor is pleased to announce the appointment of Srimoyee Mitra to the position of Curator of Contemporary Art effective July 11, 2011. Ms. Mitra is a graduate of the Master of Arts program in Art History at York University and has recently been the Program Coordinator at Toronto's South Asian Visual Arts Centre while maintaining an independent curatorial practice and serving on the Board of Directors of Fuse magazine.
Her recent curatorial initiatives include Changing Stakes: Contemporary Art Dialogues with Dubai which opens at Mercer Union this fall (2011) and the exhibition Crossing Lines: An Intercultural Dialogue (2009) for the Glenhyrst Art Gallery. Her work on the latter exhibition has led to one of her most engaging recent publications on contemporary art with the essay "Learning through Crossing Lines: An Intercultural Dialogue" for the multi-authored anthology Cultivating Canada: Reconciliation through the Lens of Cultural Diversity (2011). Having participated recently in the Shift: Dialogues on Migration in Contemporary Art conference at the MacKenzie Art Gallery and Extra-Curricular: Between Art and Pedagogy, Part I organized by the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery, University of Toronto, Ms. Mitra's curatorial direction spans contemporary art through bridging the academic and gallery environments. She has also taught at York University in the area of Asian art and published regularly in artist-run, art gallery and contemporary critical circles as well as developed programming in collaboration with the Art Gallery of Ontario's Youth Council.
Following a national search for a candidate for this position, the Gallery' search committee was unanimous in its decision. Ms. Mitra was the committee's ideal candidate given her emphasis on collaboration, cross-cultural dialogue, and her focus on establishing international contexts for the study and exhibition of contemporary art in Canada. We look forward to the contributions Ms. Mitra will make to Windsor's unique international border community and to contemporary curatorial practice in Canada.
"We are delighted to have Ms. Mitra join the staff of the Art Gallery of Windsor" notes Director Catharine Mastin. "Her interest in joining the Gallery is a sign of both the economic and cultural re-energizing of Windsor and is testimony to this Gallery's long-standing reputation as a centre of excellence for contemporary art."
